Chapter 22

“By the light of Taykato’s wings,” Likitite snorted in Dragon-speech, “what are you doing?”

“We’re going to find Machi,” Mekla replied. She had a small canvas bag and was quickly raiding the temple canteen.

“‘We?’”

“You aren’t planning on staying here alone, are you?” Mekla paused, gazing at the dragon priest. Likitite narrowed his eyes. “At the very least, stay in the library. The bodies here are beginning to smell. And besides, it’s not healthy. Flies and bugs of all kinds will be creeping in here soon.” She tsked to herself as she threw more small boxes and cans into the sack. “Not much here in the way of food, but I suppose it’ll have to do.”

The dragon priest nodded his massive, slate-gray head. “Fine, I shall stay in the library. But I cannot come with you to help Machi.”

“And why not?” Mekla tied the canvass off with a piece of string. “You know just as well as I do what Ry’Ugure is capable of. Machi might have been able to ward him off once with magic, but she can hardly fight a whole army, not with the powers a human posses. She needs dragons. And since we’re all untrained, she needs lots of us. The Entity only knows whether Ry’Ugure has been training his people to harness the powers or not.”

“Considering they’re using old weapons,” Likitite replied, “I doubt they are.”

“Still, if they don’t it would be a greater advantage for us. Maybe we could stop them.”

“You know that the priests are forbidden to use magic,” he reminded her.

“It is magic, or our lives. I’m sure He would forgive you.”

The two dragons left the canteen, Mekla hurrying down the hall back towards where the secret entrance lay. Her tail twisted and snapped the air, a gesture of extreme nervousness. She didn’t dare go out through the main hall and the gate. The Entity only knew what had become of the rotting horrors in front.

“Besides,” Likitite continued, trying to keep up with the younger dragon, “none of us has used magic in centuries, other than dabbling in small tricks to entertain hatchlings. How is she to teach all of us before the Hive strikes again? It would take months, if not years.”

Mekla narrowed her golden eyes. “We are born with the knowledge.” She squeezed through the small entrance that led to the secret passageway. “We are the direct decedents of Taykato. We are his children. ‘Just as we have known him our whole lives—”

“‘We know of his love. Magic,” Likitite finished. “I know the texts.”

The narrowing, earthen walls forced the pair to hunch over, wings folded tightly against their backs. “We’ve all felt it. In all our moments, the tingling of the particles, ready for us the moment we should need them. They give us strength, courage. They guide us to the right course of action to follow His teachings. With a little practice, we can all help her fight off the Hive.”

Likitite let out a heavy sigh, following her out of the narrow cave and into a fairly large cavern.
